Joe Riley

Joe Riley is arts editor, columnist and leader writer for the Liverpool ECHO. The Life of Riley is a wry look at existence - local, national and international (and occasionally into outer space) - as seen by the UK's senior serving arts critic and the ECHO's longest-serving journalist.

Seeing Red

I am not a football fan in the accepted sense. I may watch the occasional Match of the Day from the sofa, but I owe no direct allegiance on the terraces. That said, like tens of thousands of like-minded, I wanted Liverpol to lift that trophy.

Not least because every single Scouser should want what's best for their city.
That's why I find it mind-boggling that Blues supporters, not evenint he same race, could not muster any spirit of support for such a monumental event which parades their city to the world.
So churlish, in fact, were some of them, that there were tales of toffeesfleeing town to faraway places, just to miss any mention of the match.
Shame on them.

Mr So-called Riley, it's clear you haven't spent much time in Liverpool. Do you actually live in the city? Perhaps you should stay in the garden with your cuttings and leave football to the big boys. I'll use a metaphor you might understand. Supporting a football team without hating all the others is like watching the opera with your hands over your ears. You get some of the experience, but none of the passion. You big daft fool.
