The Roman Catholic church - like its Anglican counterpart - has a dread of being involved in debates that involve homophobia. Both faiths wish the 'problem' would just go away.
But the latest bout of ignorance does not concern the ordination of gay clergy (of which there are many), but rather a failure to address bullying of gay pupils in schools.
The RCs are refusing to follow government guidelines requiring specific condemnation of homophobic bullying. The weak excuse is that it would lead to a deluge of paperwork, whereas no-one seems to have minded the similar deluge of paperwork (in the out-tray to Whitehall) over catholic agencies vis a vis gay couples adopting children.
Alas, the reasoning is as see-through and fake as the Shroud of Turin. And all this from a church which outwardly preaches tolerance (while occupying the high moral ground), but has a deplorable track record when it comes to tackling the most serious type of bullying in its midst, by ignoring the not rare actions of paedophile priests.
